You’re searching for running shoes and now you see ads for them on every page. You’re visiting a friend and suddenly all of your ads are for places in the city you’re currently in. These scenarios are all too familiar to anyone with a mobile device. Is your phone listening to you? Maybe. But chances are, these seemingly all-knowing ads have been personalized based on ad tracking. Mobile devices host vast amounts of data about us – from places you eat, things you like, things you’ve searched, and more. Feeling a little exposed? It can be unsettling, but we’re here to help. Here are some quick and easy steps to limit ad tracking on your mobile device:

iOS:

There are two ways to limit ad tracking on your iOS devices – interest-based ads and location-based ads.

To limit the interest-based ad tracking,

Go to Settings > Privacy > Advertising > Turn on “Limit Ad Tracking”

Here you can also reset the advertising identifier that is currently assigned to you.

To turn off location-based ads,

Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Turn off “Location-Based Apple Ads”

Bonus Tip:

You can also limit ad tracking on your Apple TV, which are usually tied to your Apple ID as well. To do so:

Go to Settings > General > Privacy > Turn on “Limit Ad Tracking”

Android:

Go to Settings > Google services > Ads > Turn on “Opt out of Ads Personalization”

Here you can also reset the advertising identifier that is currently assigned to you.

Take a look at the permissions of individual applications on your device – this can range from access to your camera and microphone to when and if it’s okay to use your location.
