Software Engineer (Front End) – Full Time, New York, NY

Ghostery, a recognized leader in online user privacy, is looking for a talented Front-End Software Engineer to help us build beautiful user interfaces across our product suite. We are interested in engineers with a passion for pushing boundaries and trying new frameworks, languages and methodologies. The ideal candidate will be a self starter who communicates well with those outside of the engineering team, as they will be working closely with our Product and Design teams to conceptualize and build new product features. Lastly, applicants must be excited to contribute to a highly visible open-source project and should have a strong desire to make web browsing a safer experience for all.

This is a mid-to-senior level engineering position with the potential to develop into a lead role in time. Candidates must have a deep working knowledge of JavaScript and prior experience building clean software applications. Knowledge of at least one back-end language is also encouraged. A formal Computer Science degree is preferred but not mandatory.


  • Build clean front-end web applications for Ghostery’s consumer and professional products
  • Work with the Product and Design teams to develop new features and address bugs
  • Help develop front-end coding standards and best practices for existing and new applications
  • Research and implement new frameworks and build tools
  • Help with the development of new Ghostery privacy applications

Required Qualifications:

  • JavaScript
  • HTML / Sass
  • Experience with at least one JavaScript framework (React/Redux, Angular, Backbone)
  • Familiarity with popular front-end Frameworks (Foundation, Bootstrap)
  • Experience with build tools (Webpack, Gulp, ESLint)
  • Understanding of HTTP (request, response, headers, sessions, authentication)
  • Experience working in an agile environment
  • Ability to build and consume command line tools (Bash, git)
  • CS degree or equivalent work experience

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Programming experience in at least one back-end language (Go, Java, C++)
  • Experience working with relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL)
  • Experience working with Amazon AWS (EC2, auto-scaling groups)
  • Ability to work with Configuration Management and Continuous Integration tools for testing and deployment (Ansible, Travis, Jenkins)
  • Prior experience working with Chrome APIs and WebExtensions (Firefox)
  • Previous history working on large-scale B2C projects (>10 million users)
  • Prior experience working in / with ad-tech
  • Experience writing JavaScript unit tests and end-to-end tests
  • Understanding of Object Oriented JavaScript and modular design patterns
  • Desktop application development a plus
