What is a VPN?
Virtual private networks, or VPNs, allow you to safely connect over the internet and shield your online activity. These networks increase privacy and security by encrypting your internet connection and cloaking your IP address as a VPN location.
Why Use a VPN?
VPNs are used for multiple reasons. Here are a few of the most popular.
- Increase privacy and security –VPNs provide an extra layer of protection from third-party trackers, hackers, and other unwanted onlookers.
- Access content in other locations – Connecting to different server locations can give you access to more tv shows and movies on streaming services like Netflix.
- Bypass restrictions – Appearing to be somewhere else allows you to bypass geo-restrictions that may otherwise limit your online experience. For example, some countries limit the use of social media and what you see in search results.
- Software testing – Changing your online location also gives you the ability to see how software functions in different cities, countries, and continents. This is particularly helpful for web and software developers.
Choosing a VPN Server Location
Unless you are trying to appear in a specific location for the reasons mentioned above, it is generally best to choose the server location closest to you. In order to encrypt your connection, everything you do online is run through the VPN server and back to your device. The further the data has to travel, the longer it takes. Note the difference in slowdowns may be minimal, so go with whatever option feels right for you.
